Silk Smitha (December 2, 1960 – September 23, 1996) was a star of
South Indian cinema during the 1980s. Born into a poor family in
Eluru of Andhra Pradesh Silk went on to star in over 200 Tamil,
Malayalam, Telugu , Kannada and a few Hindi films.

She was named Vijayalakshmi at birth but at an early age changed
her name to Smitha. After her first Tamil movie Vandi Chakkaram
(The wheel) in 1979, Smitha began calling herself Silk after the bar
girl part she played in the movie. At the age of nine Smitha left school
after the fourth standard determined to become a film star and
moved in with her aunt in Madras, the then centre of South Indian film
industry.

Her dance numbers and her bold performances in films like
Moondram Pirai have made her the ultimate symbol of sensuality in
Tamil and Telugu cinema.

Silk committed suicide in her house, in Madras.
