Delhi's married men spread sex scare

By Khalid M Ansari

Sex outside marriage is injurious to health. With more and more Delhi men falling prey to sexually transmitted diseases, adulterous pleasure can lead
to a lot of pain.

According to Dr Rohit Bhargav, a consultant with Max Heathcare, infidelity to their partners has made married men susceptible to genital infections.

"Casual sex, both paid and otherwise, increases vulnerability to Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI). And it's been a common clinical observation in
recent years that a majority of the male patients are not bachelors", says Bhargav.

This is damning, especially after a recent study funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation squarely blamed married Indian men for spreading
AIDS in the country. An overwhelming 85 per cent of the cases were found to have been contracted through unsafe sex.

Shockingly, the sex scare may spiral out of control despite easily available treatment. "Married men seem to care for nothing except physical
gratification. In the five years that I have been dealing with such cases, the numbers have almost doubled. Interestingly not one of the men who came to
me had caught the infection from his legally wedded wife. Contact with prostitutes or casual sex partners was usually the cause," claims leading
dermatologist Dr Neychelle Fernandes.

Experts blame the difference in how each gender perceives sexual relations for the alarming trend. While the urban male has graduated from sexual
accountability to pure pleasure, the woman still thinks twice before violating the social code, says Dr Shikha Sharma. "Like any other metro, Delhi too
offers ample opportunities for couples to mix in a free sex environment. The figures speak for themselves. The married man's libido seems to be
driving him berserk", quips Sharma, a lifestyle counsellor in Delhi.

"Patients often cite boredom in marital life as the reason for seeking pleasure elsewhere. With many Indian women unwilling or unable to experiment
in the bedroom, the married man becomes a victim of his own libido," says Dr S C Bharija, senior dermatologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi.
Google R&D search engine result: Bangalore
Its first centre outside California to come up in India’s Silicon Valley next yr
MYLENE MANGALINDAN

DECEMBER 11: Popular Web-search technology company Google Inc plans to open an engineering research and development centre in India, its first
outside the US, early next year.

The closely held Mountain View, California, company will open a centre in Bangalore in March, and hopes to hire about 100 engineers initially, said
Wayne Rosing, Google’s Vice-President of Engineering, in an interview to The Wall Street Journal.

Google (www.google.com) has been looking to expand the pool from which it selects employees with computer-science and engineering
backgrounds, he added, and realises it will be restricted in that goal if it requires those employees to work in the US, because many people can’t obtain
work visas.

‘‘We just want more really great engineers,’’ Rosing said. ‘‘It’s clear there are a significant number of really talented computer scientists in India.’’

The expansion comes amid much contention about the ‘‘offshore’’ trend among US companies. Many technology and other companies have opened
offices in countries such as India and China to take advantage of the cheaper labour, while cutting jobs in the US. Google, however, says this new
centre isn’t a cost-cutting or outsourcing move.

Other factors also played a role in the company’s decision to open its first R&D centre in India. Several Google employees are willing to spend
‘‘significant time’’ there to help identify prospective employees and assist those new hires as they learn the Google code base during a year of training,
Rosing said.

Indian officials also impressed Rosing when he toured various cities there. ‘‘It’s clear India is going to be a major player,’’ he said.

The company has 21 offices world-wide; those outside the US are primarily sales offices.

Google employs engineers at three US locations: Mountain View; Santa Monica, California; and New York. More than 1,000 employees work at Google;
about half work at technical-, or engineering-related jobs, a spokesman said.

Google has been in the spotlight a lot recently because the start-up is planning an initial public offering early next year that could value the company at
as much as $25 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. A Google spokesman declined to confirm or comment on the company’s IPO
plans.
