Priyanka Chopra turns sexy singer
NEW DELHI, December 15
Model-turned-actress Priyanka Chopra is on a song. An aspiring crooner, the former Miss World promises to give raunchy
remix stars a run for their money.
"Yana Guptas and Meghna Naidus of the world will soon be history. Anybody who has seen 'Andaaz' knows I am not shy of
exposing; and I have every intention of turning on the heat with my music video. Considering the fact that I sing quite well, the
album should indeed be hard to resist. Very few people know that I sang for a Tamil film called 'Thamizhan' and want to make
it my second vocation after acting. Besides playback, there could be many more private albums in the future", she gushes.
The lyrics, claims Chopra, will be in keeping with the bump-n-grind mood of the videos. According to her: "Put a woman in a
bikini and she's sure to be a hit. The songs will therefore be shot in and around swimming pools and beaches for maximum
erotic impact. Pubs and bars also lend themselves to romance and glamour and make for some really provocative
sequences. With my experience in films, I certainly know how to shake a leg and audiences should get an eyeful."
Chopra, hailed as tinsletown's newest sex siren following her bare-dare performance in 'The Hero' and 'Andaaz', insists she
is not hedging her bets as an actress. "I have no cause to panic. 'Andaaz' was a huge success and I have other big-banner
films like Sanjay Gupta's 'Plan' and Sajid Nadiadwala's 'Mujhse Shaadi Karoge' in the pipeline. There are many more offers
that I am considering. However a music album should go a long way in proving just how versatile I am. Besides it will also
give the girls who do the steamy numbers, something to think about," she quips.
Rise in women assuming criminal identities
Neeta Sharma
Tuesday, December 16, 2003 (New Delhi):
A disturbing trend is now emerging in the country with women actively participating in organised crimes.
Twenty-nine-year old Shalini Jyoti, is the latest member of the Fazal-ur-Rahman gang to be arrested.
Shalini who worked as a secretary was reportedly providing the underworld don inputs and personal details about
businessmen in the country.
The don would use the information to extort money from the moneyed class.
Rahman's name figured recently in an extortion case involving Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her parents.
According to the police, Shalini was introduced to Rahman while she was visiting Dubai on a tourist visa in 1996. "We are
questioning her for more on her role in the organization," said Ashok Chand, DCP, Special Cell.
Key roles
The police admit that the trend of women playing key roles in under world operations either as wives or girlfriends and
sometimes also at the helm of the operations has not changed.
Some of the prominent names which have emerged in the recent past include:
* Archana Sharma who has been actively involved in extortion operations.
* Poonam Bhagat whose name has been linked with Babloo Srivastav, presently lodged in the Allahabad jail.
* Monica Bedi, a name synonymous with under world don Abu Salem.
"Its easier for women to get away with crime. For example, women are often made to carry contraband as they are not checked
very well," said Chand.
Clearly the whole image of women being the weaker sex is being taken advantage of by some keen to take a quick route to
making big bucks.
Woman abducts her own niece
Hyderabad, Dec. 17: Highlighting the dangers of kidnappers picking up schoolchildren with ease, a seven-year-old student
was kidnapped from Froebel’s High School at Red Hills on Tuesday by a burkha-clad woman, who turned out to be her aunt.
Fortunately, police tracked down and rescued Aameera Bibi within six hours, and nabbed her kidnappers in the early hours of
Wednesday after tracing the telephone on which the ransom call was made.
The kidnapper has been identified as Sameena Begum, a nurse at Amba Nursing Home at Vijaynagar colony and a resident
of Moti Darwaza in Golconda Fort. Her aide Mohammed Akheel, 22, a resident of Reshmabagh in Golconda and working in a
hotel, was also arrested. Sameena said she had hoped to get a ransom which she could use to fly to Dubai and get married.
Police said Aameera was taken away from her school by a burkha-clad woman on Tuesday at about 11 am.
Explaining how it happened, school correspondent Shahbaz Hussain said: “A burkha clad woman came to our school on
Tuesday at around 11 am and identified herself as the aunt of the girl. She wrote her name on the visitors’ slip as Waheeda
Begum. She told us that the girl is not well and that her parents had asked her to pick up her. The teacher asked the girl
whether she would identify the woman and Aameera identified her as her aunt. The teacher was still doubtful and asked the
woman why she had come, as usually the parents pick her up. She replied that Aameera’s mother was waiting in an
autorickshaw outside. Then we let her to take the girl.”
Aameera’s father Ajaz Ahmed said, “My wife dropped Aameera at the school in the morning. In the afternoon around 12.00 my
wife Rizwana Begum went to pick up the girl. She was told by the school that the girl had been taken away by a burkha-clad
woman.”
Around 1.15 pm Rizwana received a phone call from the kidnappers who demanded Rs 5 lakh ransom to release the girl.
“They approached us and immediately we formed a special team. A caller ID was arranged on the phone with the help of
BSNL within an hour. Policemen were deployed in mufti at Aamera’s house. Around 4.20 pm on Tuesday, they received
another call demanding that the money be paid at 10 am of Wednesday. We traced the number 23302187 to an STD booth in
Golconda area. A team led by SI Satyanarayana rushed to spot in mufti. When they are on watch they found a well-dressed girl
playing with other children in a lane at Resham Bagh. We identified the girl and brought her to safety,” said Central Zone DCP
C V Anand.
The girl was playing in front of the house of Akheel. He was arrested, and he confessed to having kidnapped the girl.
“I was paid Rs 200 by Sameena. I went with her to a house at Khairatabad and kept the girl for some time there and brought
her to Golconda. Sameena promised me to give my share after getting Rs 5 lakh,” said Akheel.
The information revealed by Akheel took the police of Sameena Begum’s friend Asmat Begum at Khairatabad and got the
details about the kidnapper. Sameena herself was picked up in the early hours of Wednesday. “I am guilty. I did kidnap her. I
can’t say who are behind this,” she told the police.
Police also took Sameena’s uncle Maqdoom into custody.
“We have to sill verify his role. Sameena told us that he is also involved,” said Anand.
The rescue operation was led by Nampally inspector S Anil Kumar. Police recovered gold eartops of the girl from the accused.
